Infertility Assessment

The first step is a detailed consultation with one of the Unit's medical consultants. A referral is required from your local doctor who provides all the information collected to date. Appointments are arranged by phone, fax or online with our co-ordinating nurse. The consultant will want to see both partners and a number of tests will be required to clarify the diagnosis as much as possible.

A follow-up appointment allows these results to be discussed and for treatment options to be outlined. It may be necessary to schedule further appointments to discuss information relating to options available.

The nurse practitioner provides specific information about the particular treatment that has been selected, including dates of commencement of treatment. Some forms of treatment require an appointment with the Unit's Fertility Counsellor, who provides additional information and support for the couple's decisions about treatment.

Finally, before treatment, the medical consultant will see the couple to answer questions and discuss issues of relevance to a child born as the result of treatment. At this time the Consent forms are completed.

The time frame in which these pre-treatment consultations are completed depends on the rate at which the couple wish to proceed and the nature of the treatment. Special consideration is given to country patients in minimising visits and co-ordinating appointments.
